In November 2003, EcoAfrica Environmental Consultants conducted a visit to Angola in conjunction with IPA, under the auspices of the BCLME Programme. The aim was to assess how coastal communities can contribute to the management of the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) and be positioned to get optimal advantage from the inshore and coastal resources. This was a ‘first approximation’ study that, together with the studies in Namibia and South Africa, will advise the BCLME Programme on the role that they can play in making this happen. The report of the EcoAfrica/IPA visit to Angola for the BCLME Programme is now available. The report presents the insights gained during visits to coastal communities and discussions with a wide range of stakeholders, and proposes a set of actions that can make coastal communities become more involved and benefit from the BCLME Programme.
